About the patterns
Adson forceps are fine tissue forceps commonly used in skin closure, available toothed or non-toothed. Spencer Wells and Halsted mosquito forceps are haemostatic (artery) forceps for clamping blood vessels, Halsted mosquito being the smaller, finer pattern. Allis tissue forceps have a toothed jaw for firmly grasping tissue. Rampley forceps hold swabs or gauze. Vulsellum forceps (Luer, Teale) are used in gynaecology to grasp the cervix. Magill forceps are used in airway management, to remove foreign bodies or guide a tube. Hartmann crocodile and Tilley aural forceps are ENT instruments for the ear and nose. Bonney polyp forceps are used gynaecologically to remove polyps. Martins splinter forceps have a fine tip for removing splinters or foreign bodies.
