Sexual Health Profile II – Female

Sexual health diseases also known as sexually transmitted infections (STI) or venereal diseases (VD) constitute a group of the infectious and parasitic diseases transmitted by means of human sexual behaviour.
Apart from sexually transmitted infections, other diseases can be contracted by means of human sexual behaviour, as well.

These include viral hepatitis, genital warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), trichomoniasis, candidal vulvovaginitis, genital herpes, scabies, crab lice and urinary tract infections.

STIs may not cause symptoms but can lead to severe medical conditions. A person who is infected may not know it and may pass on the infection to a sex partner as well as a pregnant mother to her newborn baby.

In fact, STIs can cause more severe health problems for women such as fertility problems and cervical cancer.
If you are sexually active, have regular checkups for STIs, especially if you have multiple partners, or symptoms that may include:

• Itching, burning or pain, especially when urinating or during intercourse, around the vagina, penis or anal area
• Unusual discharge or blood in the urine
• Rashes, sores, blisters, or growths around the vagina, penis or anal area.
