Gastrointestinal Screen – Bacteria
A gastrointestinal (GI) screen is a diagnostic test that can also detect the presence of bacteria that cause gastrointestinal infections. Some common bacteria that can be detected through a GI screen include:
Salmonella: Salmonella bacteria can cause gastroenteritis, which is an infection of the stomach and intestines that can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Symptoms of salmonella infection usually appear within 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria.
Campylobacter: Campylobacter bacteria can cause gastroenteritis, with symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Symptoms usually appear within 2 to 5 days after exposure to the bacteria.
Escherichia coli (E. coli): Certain strains of E. coli bacteria can cause gastroenteritis, with symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Symptoms usually appear within 2 to 5 days after exposure to the bacteria.
Shigella: Shigella bacteria can cause a type of gastroenteritis known as shigellosis, which is characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Symptoms usually appear within 1 to 3 days after exposure to the bacteria.
Yersinia: Yersinia bacteria can cause gastroenteritis, with symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Symptoms usually appear within 1 to 3 days after exposure to the bacteria.
